Victory!
Wow… a game for the ages as the Halifax Hawks pushed the pace faster than any game seen so far by the Hurricanes. And our first taste of adversity as the Hawks opened the scoring at the 9 minute mark of the first on a goal mouth scramble Yochoff (Rappoldt). A few shifts later after the Hurricanes began looking for a second gear they found it and the momentum started to turn. Shift duration on both sides dropped very quickly.
“Good things come to those who wait” they say but the Hurricanes kept coming and finally on a deflected shot from the point off the skate of Morgan Messenger (Jollimore) found the back of the net; things were even. With a nice net drive from the near post the puck just didn’t quite get through but the short rebound was roofed by Ty Duffus (J. Messenger) to put the Hurricanes on top 2-1 before the completion of the second.
The third period break was not only timely but needed as the pace of this game gave credibility to the new league as the competition level was high. With all four lines skating to stifle any attack Halifax could muster some key saves and defensive plays were still required. This Halifax squad is good and we were digging deep. Opportunities for the opposition decreased though as the pursuit on the puck increased and yes the smell of victory so close. With a late pull of the Halifax goal tender for an extra attacker things should have got very interesting but the Hurricanes pressure did not let that materialize and not until with a few seconds left to tick off did the stern focus and intensity on the players faces arch nicely into toothy wide faced grins. Make the final - Hurricanes 2 Hawks 1.
While Parents have miles to go before they sleep the players will be napping in cars somewhere starting outside the parking lot with that effort. Well done! The BMO Hurricanes are on top, now the job gets tougher...trying to stay there!
