The Nova Bantams rolled into the second week of the 2014-15 season looking to build on their impressive 2-0 start.  “We are looking to right a few of the mistakes from the first weekend of the season,” head coach Kyle MacDonald offered.  “We have been taking some bad penalties, so we have to keep our cool and stay out of the box.  We also know that in this league you can live or die by your special teams, so we have focused on our special teams this week.  It’s early in the season, and our coaching staff is really positive about the team”.  On Saturday at the Antigonish Arena against the Truro Bearcats, the Novas got behind the 8 ball in the first even though they carried the majority of the play throughout the first and the second.  It wasn’t until the third period when the Novas’ Logan Chisholm and Logan Timmons got them on the board with a pair of goals in quick succession.  The Novas increased the lead midway through the third when Stephen Fox potted an insurance marker off the stick of Logan Chisholm.  Jack Morris chipped in with a pair of assists and Fearghus MacDonald rounded out the scoring with a single helper.  Kolby Baker made several key saves late in the game to help seal a 3-2 victory.  On Sunday morning at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre, the Novas scored two first period goals and never let off the gas enroute to a 7-1 victory against the ACCEL Halifax Hawks.  Jacob Stewart paced the attack with a hat trick, while Calum MacPherson notched a pair of goals and Logan Timmons and Malcolm MacEachern each added singles.  Logan Chisholm had a huge game adding 5 helpers to his early season point total; Calum MacPherson added a couple of assists to go with his two goals.  Jack Morris and Stephen Fox also had two assists and Sean Stewart rounded out the scoring with an assist.  Colton Ellis handled the goaltending chores for Sunday’s contest.  “We found out on Sunday that if we focus on doing little things properly, the scoreboard will take care of itself”, said Coach MacDonald.  “We cut down on the turnovers really concentrated on playing well in the neutral zone, and we seemed to be able to generate a lot of good things from that strong neutral zone play.  It’s exciting to see how the boys are progressing!”  The Novas next see action in the HRM on September 27th and 28th with a pair of games against the Dartmouth Whalers.  The Novas don’t see home ice again until October 4th when they play the Scotsburn Crushers at the Antigonish Arena.
